- History
- In 1830, D. Rafael José da Cunha began breeding fighting cattle, making his debut in 1837 at Campo de Santana bullring in Lisbon. His herd also supplied the first Portuguese bull fought in Madrid, in 1854. The mounted head of that bull, Azeitona, a gift from Spanish friends, is still proudly displayed on the front wall of the Casa de los Carros. The fighting-cattle herd subsequently underwent several divisions and almost disappeared. In 1969, however, the heirs D. Manuel and D. Carlos Tavares Veiga revived the tradition and founded a new herd with a large number of cows from D. Rafael Calado and breeding bulls from Dr. Silva. Two years later it was increased with cows from Cabral Ascensión and Oliveira Hermanos. Later, after all the previous cattle had been removed, cows and breeding bulls were acquired from D. Álvaro Domecq Díez, Torrestrella.
