- History
- This ranch descends from the herd formed in the late eighteenth century by D. Julián de Fuentes with cattle from Salamanca and of Jijona origin. D. Vicente Martínez acquired it and, after several crosses, purchased the breeding bull Diano from D. Eduardo Ibarra in 1904. In 1925, D. Antonio Pérez-Tabernero bought D. Pedro Fernández Martínez’s share from the heirs of D. Vicente Martínez, registered it under his wife Dª María Montalvo’s name and adopted the brand and ribbon colours still used today. After Dª María Montalvo’s death in 1942, the ranch appeared under her heirs’ names. In 1967, it began appearing under D. Juan María Pérez-Tabernero Montalvo’s name. During the 70s, he began crossing the cattle with stock from D. Juan Pedro Domecq, before passing the ranch in 1984 to his son D. Juan Ignacio, who named it Montalvo. Cattle from Zalduendo and D. Daniel Ruiz were acquired in 1994; this branch is managed separately from the original Martínez line.
