- History
- D. Juan Muriel established this herd in 1885 with cattle from Salas and Martínez. It was inherited by his son D. Vicente, who rebuilt it by removing the previous cattle and acquiring others from the Conde de Santa Coloma and Albaserrada. In 1949 it was inherited by his sons D. Juan and D. Lucio. Don Juan adopted the advertised name Juan Muriel de Olmedilla, with the original brand and ribbon colours. After D. Juan Muriel's death, his heirs sold the herd in 1975 to D. Juan Pérez Tabernero Martín, who advertised it as Rio Grande. In 1990 it was acquired by El Cahoso, S.A., which established it exclusively with cows and breeding bulls from D. Alipio Pérez-Tabernero, of Santa Coloma origin. In 1996, 70 cows and three breeding bulls were acquired from D. Andrés Ramos, with this bloodline kept entirely separate from the existing one. In 1998, 25 cows and two breeding bulls were acquired from D. Luis Algarra. That same year, all cattle of Domecq origin were sold to the El Cahoso breeding ranch, leaving the herd composed exclusively of Santa Coloma-origin cattle today.
